The often used TCM therapies are acupuncture, herbology, tuina, moxibustion, cupping, qigong, advices on diet and exercises as well as electric, magnetic or laser stimulation to acupuncture points. The ITT method is to realize individual treatment strategy and to awaken the natural healing power within you, the client.
At TCMWORKS, we know your name, understand your concerns and we do everything we can to help you. We cannot guarantee that we can cure you, but we certainly treat you well and make you feel better. You are the VIP! [top]
Dr. W. Way Yuan, MB, M.M.Sc., MA, Ph.D.
Hello my friend, Please just call me Way. I hope you find the right way to improve your health. I was born from a Chinese medicine family, I have been studying and practising acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since 1978. I completed a 5 year professional program (1978-83) at Hunan College of TCM in Changsha, China. Then I continued my postgraduate training (1983-86) in TCM with a thesis entitled “A Study on the Inner Developmental Laws of the Basic Theories of TCM.” In 1988, the College appointed me TCM lecturer . I co-authored books and published many articles in TCM journals.
In 1991, I received an M.A. degree in medical history from the University of Ottawa. My mémoire was on medical missionaries and the introduction of modern surgery to China". In August 2000, I completed a Ph.D. thesis on the history of traditional Chinese medicine in Canada. While pursuing my studies, I maintained my practice because I believe that practice is the core of TCM. This should be true even for TCM scholars and researchers. Otherwise, his (or her) work will have no life. My manuscript "Eastern Medicine Moves West: TCM in Canada" is in the process of becoming a book. As a healer, scholar and teacher, I am believed to be one of the best TCM practitioners in the Western world. Here is my synopsis: [top]
We (Way and Yalan) started our part-time practice in 1989 when we immigrated to this great country. Over the years, we had our clinic on Somerset Street West (Ottawa's Chinatown), Gamelin Street and Notre Dame Street (Gatineau). Now our main office is centrally located on Ottawa's Spadina Avenue, a quiet street accessible to people in the great national capital region.
Our clinic is spacious and clean, and it is decorated with traditional Oriental artwork. Classical Chinese music is always playing. Each client has her (his) own treatment room. TCM charts and books are on display. In this atmosphere, you'll feel relaxed and peaceful even before the treatment starts. We have TCM herbal products shown in the waiting area and the hallway. We also have a herbal pharmacy for individual herbal ingredients where we dispense personalized herbal formulas. In downstairs, we have a lecture room where talks are held from time to time. The only regret is that our facility is not wheelchair accessible. [top]

Consultations, Sessions & Costs
At TCMWORKS Clinic, we are committed to holistic healing and health. We care for our clients, not just to treat their current conditions, but also to improve their general health and well-being. Unlike some acupuncturists who did only a short course in one single therapy, we are fully trained in the whole range of traditional Chinese health sciences. Besides acupuncture, we also use individualized herbal formulae, TCM herbal products, moxibustion, tuina, acupressure, qigong, and offer lifestyle advices such as diet and exercises.
A consultation can take up to half a hour. The purpose of the consultation is to collect clinical information and complete TCM analysis in order to form individualized treatment strategies. The consultations are carried out in a comfortable setting with the full attention of a practitioner while you are enjoying a cup of Chinese tea. Like conventional medicine and any other healing systems, acupuncture and Chinese medicine have limitations. For the benefit of the clients and for our professional reputation, we accept only those whose conditions might be improved with our treatments. If the client agrees to receive our care, we will start the first treatment session right after the consultation.
Each session takes about one hour. A client will take one to five sessions per week, most likely two per week depending on her or his condition. After a couple of weeks, we usually decrease the treatment frequency and then reduce it further to maintenance schedule. Your health philosophy, financial resources, expense coverage and your available time, all can affect your treatment frequency. You don't have to be sick to benefit from our treatment. In TCM, we emphasize on prevention and ultimate state of health. Some people come simply for their monthly "tune-up" treatment and some come when they just start to sense something off balance.
The cost is not covered by provincial health plan. Please check with your extended health plan and with us, you might have coverage. We will prepare professional receipts to help your claim. Good health is priceless and improving your quality of life is worth every penny. In 2008, the first session including a initial consultation is $83. For consultation only, it is $28. The following sessions are $55 each, an acceptable fee for our best quality professional service. Except for the cost of the herbs which is quite reasonable, no other itemized fee schedule. We can only accept cash or check as we cannot process credit card or debit card. [top] Location, Parking and Hours
